ISU started out strong taking it to the Shockers and running out to a 23-10 lead. Unfortunately Maurice Evans caught on fire, nailing 4 straight 3 pointers, and Wichita scored the next 11 to get within 2 at 23-21. Later they tied it at 24 and 27 before taking a 4 point lead (31-27) into the locker room. Kyle Cartmill paced the Birds in the first half with 10 points.
In the second half ISU scored the first 4 to tie it up but Wichita moved ahead again and held on to it until about 3:30 to go in the game. The Birds finally tied up the Shockers and took the lead for good at 61-60. Leroy Watkins purposely fouled the Shockers worst free throw shooter (28%) twice forcing them to beat us with someone besides Evans. He missed the front end of both 1 and 1's and Cartmill and Watkins pounded the ball inside for layups or fouls to finally pull away to the 68-61 final.
Evans led all scorers with 33 points while also grabbing a game high 8 rebounds. Cartmill paced the Birds with 16 points and 4 assists. Watkins scored 14 points and Tarise Bryson scored 10 points, all but 1 in the second half and grabbed a team high 7 rebounds. The Birds also got good play off the bench from freshman Shawn Jeppson who hit a crucial 3 pointer late in the game and grabbed 3 rebounds all of which came at pivitol times. The game was foul plagued from start to finish with the whistle blowing 52 times. ISU, which made only 9 of 19 free throws in the first half finished the game hitting 25 of 38, icing 12 of their last 13.
