ISU vs Southwest Missouri St February 3rd SMS came out strong jumping to a 5-0 lead with Kevin Ault scoring all their points and quickly took a surprisingly decent sized crowd out of the game. Moments later the score was Kyle Cartmill 8 Ault 5 and the first rowdy crowd of the year went wild. From that point on it was all ISU as they capped off a 16-2 run. A technical on Kevin Stallings after a terrible call gave Victor Williams his third foul of the game looked to possibly be a momentum swing but SMS came away with only 2 points. Seconds later, SMS coach Steve Alford was called for a technical after Kenneth Pierson was fouled on a defensive rebound. What could have been a dagger to the Bears only turned out to be 2 points for the Birds. KP missed the front end of a 1 and 1, Cartmill hit both free throws but they failed to score on the possession. SMS stepped up their defense in the second half and made a couple of runs at the Birds, but could get no closer than 7. ISU went on to win 62-54. The Birds have been the only team to contain SMS's Danny Moore this season. After holding him to his only single digit scoring game ( 8 points ) of the season at SMS the Birds once again held him well below his average (17.6 ppg ) allowing him to score only 10, with no free throws. They also contained their second leading scorer, Kevin Ault (12.1 ppg ) after his early outburst. He finished with 7 points and didn't score after 18:31 left to go in the first half. Tarise Bryson, turned an unbelievable effort considering his fractured shin. He scored a team high 19 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. He also took out the Gatoraid jug at the end of the SMS bench chasing a loose ball. Kyle Cartmill was the difference in the Birds tonight. After scoring the Birds first 8 he went on to score 18, grabbed a team high 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block and 1 steal. Victor Williams played well despite early foul trouble limiting him to only 15 minutes. He scored 4 points, grabbed 3 rebounds, a team high 5 assists, 1 steal and only 2 turnovers. Sean Riley scored 4 and shared team high honors with 7 rebounds. LeRoy Watkins played 33 minutes, scored 6 points , grabbed 3 rebounds and had team highs of 3 blocks and 2 steals. Both Sean and Leroy played great defense against Moore tonight and turned him into a non-factor.
