ISU vs
Pittsburgh
November 22nd
7:05 p.m.

ISU entered the game at 1-1 Pittsburgh is 1-0.Pittsburgh was looking for revenge after ISU won at Pittsburgh last year 69-50.ISU was trying to rebound from a 80-66 loss at Wisconsin while Pittsburgh was coming off of a convincing victory.ISU's Jamar Smiley returned after serving a 4 game suspension.Kenneth Pierson(knee injury) didn't play but he did dress for the game.Leroy Watkins dislocated his left shoulder again a couple of days ago and did not play.He is expected to be out another 1-2 weeks.Pittsburgh's starting point guard Kellie Taylor(9.6 ppg,4.1 rpg,2.2 apg) did not play due to a stress fracture in his left foot.He will be out for 6 weeks.Freshmen Kevin Leslie(6'8",250) and John Finneman(6'6",190) were both out after undergoing knee surgery.

ISU switched from their normal man to man to a zone defense a few minutes into the game after falling behind 12-9 and went on a 28-5 run to seal the verdict early in the game.ISU led by as many as 32 before coasting to a 87-65 victory. The Birds led by 18 at the half.Rico Hill led the Birds in 3 stats with 22 points,14 rebounds and 3 steals, his 13th career double/double performance.Vonteego Cummings, considered by many to be the best guard in the Big East, led Pitt with 21 points.

Jamar Smiley was a welcome sight back on the court and the difference he makes in the team was evident. He tied a career high for assists with 14,while grabbing 4 boards and scoring 4 points. He also did a great job defending Cummings.Although he scored 21 points he had only 9 with 7 min. to go in the game and did most of his scoring on desperation shots at the end of the game. Kyle Cartmill scored a career high 16 points. And Skipp Schaefbauer grabbed a career high 9 rebounds to go along with19 points, 5 assists and 2 steals with only 1 turnover in 29 minutes.Skipp twisted his ankle on the last play of the 1st half, but managed to play through the pain in the 2nd half while putting forward probably his best performance as a Redbird.Dan Muller scored 11 points, had 2 steals and 4 rebounds in yet another Dan-like performance.Steve Hansell had a better game with 6 points,2 steals,2 rebounds,2 blocks and 3 assists.

The Birds are now 2-1 as they prepare to head to Hawaii to participate in the United Airlines Tip-off Tournament in Honolulu.
