The MVC Tournament
March 2nd
time & opponent TBA
Will be shown on ESPN

After a tough first half ISU easily defeated SMSU 84-74 to capture the MVC tournament championship and gain the leagues automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.

The game started on an emotional high for the Redbirds as the team and most everybody in the arena was surprised by the return of Skipp Schaefbauer to the arena.Skipp was waiting for the team in the locker room when they returned from pregame warmups and he led them out onto the floor to the roar of the crowd.

The game was close throughout the first half as ISU couldn't pull away from the pesky Bears. The Rebirds only trailed on 2 occasions during the half and held a slim 38-36 advantage at the half. The beginning of the second half provided more of the same as ISU held on to the advantage by no more than 6 points. However SMS's Danny Moore and Kevin Ault got into foul trouble and were no longer effective defensively. That led to a 20-6 ISU run which started at the 11:03 mark and ended at the 3:16 mark with the Redbirds up 76-59.LeRoy Watkins and Rob Gibbons held Moore to 4 points on 2-9 shooting and no free throws which must be a first.ISU ran its lead up to 18 points at before clearing the bench.

LeRoy Watkins led ISU with 18 points while adding 5 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.Dan Muller scored 17 points, grabbed 2 rebounds and handed out 2 assists.Jamar Smiley scored 11 points, had 4 rebounds and 3 assists.Rico Hill had a rare off night scoring only 9 points. He also grabbed 5 rebounds, had 3 assists and 2 steals.

Once again the bench was the difference.Steve Hansell had a huge game.He had 7 rebounds and 8 assists, both team highs,14 points and 1 steal.Rob Gibbons scored 13 points, grabbed 5 rebounds,1 assist and 1 blocked shot.Kyle Cartmill chipped in 2 points,1 rebound,2 assists and an amazing blocked shot that might leave arena officials considering raising the roof height.

After the game Skipp was wheeled out onto the floor by MVC Coach of the Year Kevin Stallings.Skipp accepted the tournament championship trophy for the team. Then the All-Tournament team was announced.ISU's Dan Muller was named tournament MVP.ISU's Leroy Watkins and MVC Player of the Year Rico Hill were also named to the squad and SMS's Danny Moore and Ben Kandelbinder rounded out the team.
