ISU(4-2) opened the 97/98 MVC season today by defeating Drake (2-4) 76-57.Dan Muller led the Birds with 23 points.ISU started the game quickly,scoring the first 7 points,however Drake scored the next 9 and the Birds didn't recover till the 2nd half.Drake led by 4 at half time 25-29.ISU scored 51 in the 2nd half and finished shooting 50% after shooting 39% in the first half.The Birds out rebounded the Bulldogs 35-31.Drake commited 28 turnovers to ISU's 24 in an extremely sloppy game.
The Birds were still suffering from the injury bug which has plagued the team since practice began.LeRoy Watkins did not play because of a dislocated shoulder.Rico Hill did not play because scar tissue surrounding the pin that was placed in his foot is inflammed.Jamar Smiley's had not practiced since twisting his ankle playing in Hawaii.However Jamar came off the bench to score 12 points with 6 assists.
ISU is 11-6 in MVC season openers.This game was only the 4th in 17 years to be played at home.The Birds are 4-0 at home and 10-3 on the road in league openers.
