Rico Hill scored 27 points on 11 of 15 shooting and grabbed 13 rebounds to record his 15th career double/double as ISU defeated Drake 74-59.Rico Hill's 13 rebounds also made him the 20th Redbird in school history to score over 1000 points and grab over 500 rebounds for his career.The Birds are now alone in first place at 4-0 and are 9-3 overall.ISU is the only remaining undefeated team in Valley play.The loss was Drake's 26th straight Valley loss.They are now 0-5 in league play and 3-10 overall.The Birds out rebounded the Bulldogs 37-25 and outshot them 54% to 42% from the field.
Dan Muller and LeRoy Watkins scored 11 a piece and Skipp Schaefbauer and Jamar Smiley chipped in 9 each.Skipp also held Drake's leading scorer,Matt Woodley,scoreless from the field (0-4).His only 3 points came off of free throws.Jamar led the Birds with 5 assists and 3 steals.
The scrappy and much improved Bulldogs hung tough with ISU through the first half as ISU's half time lead was only 4 at 36-32.However the Birds opened the second half by going on a 15-8 run in the first 6 minutes to lead 51-40.Drake cut the lead to 7 with 9 minutes to go but ISU finished the game on a 16-8 run for the final 15 point difference.
