Freshman Gregg Alexander started off the
game by hitting 2 straight 3 pointers to surpass former Redbird Dan
Muller in 3 pointers made in a season by a freshman with his 49th and 30th
3's of the season. Wichita tied the game at 8 and the 2 teams traded leads until
Wichita went on a 9-1 run to take a 5 point lead. Randy
Rice scored 6 of ISU's next 8 points to close the gap to 1 at halftime,
36-65.
The game stayed close in the second half, but the Shockers stayed on top
until Shawn Jeppson 3 pointer tied the
game at 56 with 7:21 remaining. 2 free throws put the Shockers back on top. A
goal tend was called on ISU's next possession on a shot by Chad
Mazanowski to tie the game at 58.
Maz came off the bench early in the second half as Andy
Strandmark was whistled for his 3rd and 4th fouls in the first minute and a
half of the second half. Maz responded by scoring 8 points, grabbing 3 rebounds
a steal and a block in 13 minutes of play.
Unfortunately, the Birds could never regain the lead. A basket on the next
possession put the Shockers ahead for good as they coasted in to a 77-66 victor,
outscoring the Birds 19-8 down the stretch.
